Okay, so no one seems to be jumping at the chance to share their own walking story. Perhaps everyone is shy? Maybe no one wants to be the first?

I'll get the ball rolling! When I was in junior high, me and my friends would get super dressed up and then walk down busy streets to: 1) see if we would run into any cute boys from our class, 2) see if any cute boys would honk at us from their cars.

I think they only honks we got were from drivers angry at our J-walking.

Feb. 7, 2011--Today I went for a late afternoon walk. I had been cooped up several days from snow or cold, north wind. As I neared a neighbor's pond I saw three separate groups of Canadian geese, probably 25-30 in a flock, facing the southwest sunning themselves. The flock that was on the pond were very still--some sitting on the water, others standing on unthawed ice, not moving as though their webbed feet were frozen into the ice. Oh, how I wish I had brought my camera! After watching the geese awhile I walked on. While looking into the blue sky with mares' tails high up, I saw what at first I took to be a buzzard soaring on a high air current. As I continued watching I noted that the sun caught the tail feathers and they were white. As the bird turned with the updraft the white head gleamed. A bald eagle! I knew the paper said that about 20 miles from us they had a bald eagle watch on a lake. I stood watching the eagle soar higher and higher until I couldn't make it out clearly. Oh, why didn't I bring my binoculars! My neighbor walk of about a mile and a half was rewarding to my spirit as well as health to my body. Enjoy a good walk.

My appreciation for walking actually began when I was in college. I always knew that walking had health benefits but I really didn't experience it firsthand until I was walking 15-30 minutes across campus (winded I might add) just to get to my next class.

It was extremely difficult at first and I had to stop several times in the beginning just to catch my breath. Slowly however I noticed that I wasn't laboring as hard to get to class and this one particular hill that used to give problems started to become fun to conquer.

Nowadays, walking is a major part of my day and trips to the grocery store or post office are now great excuses to lace up my shoes and go for a walk.

I have a story you may want to share with your blog readers. Recently, I laced up my Nike Pegasus and embarked on an 800-mile walk to visit California's 21 missions. I wasn’t soul searching. I’m not an endurance athlete. I’m an ordinary 54-year old woman.

I divided my peregrination into 12 months, taking four days each month to cover approximately 75 miles, with Amtrak as my chauffeur to and fro. Google maps and “A Hiker’s Guide to California’s 21 Spanish Missions” were my compass. Before launch, I sent an email inviting friends and family to join me on any segment of the excursion. A surprising number said yes. What ensued was the journey of a lifetime.

I was the 11th person to ever complete the walk. I’ve recently published a book about my hike. It’s full of stories from the road written in the throes of exhausting 20+ mile days. There are also hundreds of accompanying photos.

Thanks!
